Martley's Wedding stopped the traffic

Traffic ground to a halt and cameras clicked furiously in April as Martly Rademeyer sailed down Long Street in the Kloof Padstal’s donkey cart to exchange wedding vows with Hanno Calitz in the old church that is now Montagu’s historic museum.

In a flowing wedding gown on the colourfully decorated donkey cart pulled by Rooiwyn and Soda, with Gideon in the driver’s seat in a white shirt with snappy bow tie, it was a memorable sight.

Fairy-tale stuff, to say the least, and something that could only happen in a town like Montagu.

On their arrival at the museum the entourage was welcomed by the wedding guests and passers-by with thunderous applause.

Martly was dubbed the “Queen of the Karoo” from the moment of her spectacular arrival. It was a wedding that will long be remembered and talked about in Montagu.
